Engineering case study

The engineering brief

Bring access decisions and environmental monitoring into one controller design while retaining an emergency override and a record of events.

SAMS brings access control and environmental monitoring into one 8051 academic design. Its scope includes multi-level PIN authentication, temperature and light sensing, an interrupt-driven emergency override and event logging. The project is documented through a Proteus circuit schematic; physical implementation remains unverified.

Access, monitoring & event handling

  • Defined multi-level PIN authentication through a 4×3 keypad, with LCD/LED feedback and a relay interface for door control.
  • Included LM35 temperature and LDR light inputs in the monitoring architecture.
  • Specified an interrupt-driven emergency override and hardware-timer use alongside the normal access and monitoring functions.
  • Included FIFO/circular-buffer event logging in the software scope and brought the controller, keypad, sensing, feedback and relay connections together in Proteus.

Design constraints

  • Authentication, sensing and feedback share the controller, while the emergency input requires a distinct interrupt-driven response.
  • The schematic establishes circuit-design evidence; it does not establish physical installation, measured sensor performance or deployed access security.

Work & results in context

  • Documented the proposed circuit integration in Proteus, including keypad, LCD, sensor and relay interfaces.
  • Established the academic scope for authentication, interrupts, timers and buffered event logging. Hardware implementation is not confirmed in the available record.

Engineering takeaways

  • Access control and monitoring involve more than a PIN check: emergency response, user feedback and event handling also shape the controller design.

Further work

  • Further development would require a documented physical implementation and validation of access, sensor, logging and emergency-override behaviour.
